A Barn Story
The new album is a real story about music and friends that went through transformations and trials throughout. It was October 2009 and I had just gotten back from a European tour for New York Town. The engineer on Barn Doors, Mr. Ted Young, came over to my house for a couple of drinks and to listen to some vinyl records I had just bought. It was then that I verbalized the idea I had about recording in some old barn in the middle of the Catskills. I don’t know if it was the beer or the vision itself, but either way, Ted agreed that it was indeed a good idea. Oh, and we also knew that we wanted Steve on the project. I really liked his work on some other records and thought he would be a great addition. Ted and I were going to split the last beer of the evening, but when I tried to open it the tab broke off, preventing it from touching our lips. We decided that was some auspicious sign so I placed the unopened Budweiser in a cabinet and told Ted we would save it as a celebratory drink when we finished tracking the record.
The next day, I realized that there was no backing out on this and that we had made a commitment to do this thing. We got into contact with Steve and he agreed to be a part of the record. We also tracked down the barn from an ad on Craigslist. It really was the first and only property we were interested in. We spent months drawing diagrams and trying to call in any favors to get appropriate gear to transform this barn into a working studio. We had some definite road blocks along the way, but got to Harvard Farm in the Catskill Mountains on June 23rd, 2010. Everything worked. We recorded with the barn doors wide open every day. We recorded tracks outside. We went swimming in the river. We built bonfires. And we made a record.
On the last day of tracking, Ted and I attempted to drink that old Budweiser that had been sitting in my cabinet for 8 months. The flavor wasn’t great and it was very warm, but it tasted like we had done something right….for once.
